More Than A Rash': The Meningitis And Sepsis Symptoms All Parents Should Know - HuffPost UK

Image
Meningitis is every parent's worst nightmare. We're often told to look out for that tell-tale rash which doesn't disappear when you hold a glass down on it, but there are many more symptoms of the illness that parents know little about. To mark World Meningitis Day (October 5), the Meningitis Research Foundation is urging parents to learn about the other symptoms of meningitis, as well as the signs of septicaemia. Advertisement The two are different issues, but can also be closely interlinked. While meningitis is inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord, septicaemia (or sepsis) is blood poisoning which can be caused by the same bacteria as meningitis overwhelming the bloodstream. This means that children with meningitis might also be fighting sepsis at the same time, resulting in a mixture of symptoms – and both can be life-threatening. A YouGov poll by the Meningitis Research Foundation found just 5% of parents can identify all the symptoms of meningitis

How To Prevent Balding In Men Before It Starts - MensXP.com

Image
Once you've hit your late thirties, there's no looking back for your hairline. It keeps receding and the hair thinning continues. The hair is no longer as lush and thick as it used to be and there's hardly any hope for the future. Experiencing hair loss in the twenties is not uncommon either.  We'd suggest you stop or at least work towards minimizing the hair loss before it starts taking a hit on the confidence level. Table of Contents The Main Causes Of Balding In Men © Istockphoto While the reason behind hair loss can be multiple, one of the most common balding causes is androgenetic alopecia, which is known as male pattern baldness. It is a hereditary condition triggered by a genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is present in the male hormone testosterone. The DHT attacks the hair follicles, which causes them to shrink. It ultimately leads to poor

Pityriasis rosea: Signs, causes, diagnosis, treatment - Insider

Image
Pityriasis rosea is a common skin condition that causes a set of temporary red, scaly rashes.  These mild rashes aren't contagious and usually clear up without medical treatment in 10 weeks or less. To soothe itching and other symptoms, try hydrocortisone cream, antihistamines, and oatmeal baths. Pityriasis rosea — which means "fine pink scale" — is a mild skin condition that typically appears as small patches of inflamed and scaly skin. These patches most often appear on your chest, abdomen, or back.  This fairly common skin condition can affect anyone, though women and people between the ages of 10 and 35 are more likely to develop it, says Dr. Cory Gaskins, a certified dermatologist and resident medical expert at BestBotox.ca. This rash might alarm you, if you notice it on yourself or a family member — but

We frequently get questions about home remedies to remove the "barnacles" that appear on our skin as we age. Doctors call this type of skin spot a seborrheic keratosis. Here is a link to a collection of dermatological photographs. You can't catch them from somebody else, although you may be more likely to develop them if they run in your family. We have not yet learned of an effective remedy to get rid of these extremely common spots. Will Hydrogen Peroxide Eliminate Seborrheic Keratosis? Q. Is there a natural way to get rid of a seborrheic keratosis? I have heard that putting hydrogen peroxide on these spots might be helpful. A. You can identify these as tan, brown or black skin growths that may be rough and are usually raised. They are benign and usually cause no trouble. We tend to collect more as we grow older. You should always have a dermatologist check such growths, especially if they change, to make sure that they are not anything more serious such as a skin

Varsity Pharma in-licenses Pol-Theta inhibitor novobiocin - The Pharma Letter

UK biopharma company Varsity Pharmaceuticals has secured exclusive rights from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), a world-leading cancer treatment and research institute, to develop and commercialize novobiocin, a potential first-in-class DNA polymerase theta inhibitor for the treatment of homologous recombination (HR) deficient cancers. Homologous recombination deficiency is where the body is unable to repair double strand breaks in DNA due to mutations in genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2. Pol-Theta is an enzyme that can repair double strand breaks that recently emerged as a new cancer specific DNA Damage Response target that compensates for the loss of HR function in HR deficient cancers such as ovarian, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancer. Whilst PARP enzyme inhibitors have seen some success in the treatment of HR deficient cancers, PARP inhibitor drug resistance is emerging as a significant barrier to their effectiveness. Research led by Professor Alan D'Andrea and publishe

Vertebral Osteomyelitis Secondary to a Retroperitoneal Abscess in an Adolescent Male: A Case Report - Cureus

Image
Although uncommon spinal infections can lead to a serious clinical sequela that often necessitates aggressive medical and surgical treatment, the spectrum of spinal infections includes osteomyelitis, isolated discitis, spondylodiscitis, epidural abscess, and spinal cord abscess. The term spondylodiscitis refers to discitis and vertebral osteomyelitis, as these two conditions can occur in conjunction with each other [1]. Pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis (PVO) is caused by an infection of the vertebral bodies that can spread to the intervertebral disc spaces [2]. Staphylococcal infections, including Staphylococcus aureus , are the most commonly identifiable causative micro-organisms in PVO. It can also be caused by Gram-negative organisms such as Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Haemophilus influenza , and Klebsiella pneumonia [3]. This paper reports the rare presentation of vertebral osteomyelitis associated with a large retroperitoneal abscess in a previously healthy

What's New and Hot in Nail and Hair Treatments - Dermatology Times

Image
Presenter Boni E. Elewski, MD, chair of the department of Dermatology and the James Elder professor of Graduate Medical Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, started her presentation on "What's new and hot in nail and hair" by sharing a number of media reports noting the impressive results of low-dose minoxidil for hair loss. "Current therapeutic options for female pattern hair loss include topical minoxidil, oral minoxidil, spironolactone, finasteride, dutasteride, platelet rich plasma therapy, and hair laser therapy," Elewski added. She shared study results of oral dutasteride in a large series of patients with frontal fibrosing alopecia, as well as positive results from 2 phase 3 trials of baricitinib for alopecia areata. Elewski next discussed using the severity of alopecia tool (SALT) in evaluating a patient, a global severity score that captures percentage of hair loss. It is a weighted sum of the percentage of hair loss in the 4 quadrants

How to identify and prevent a sinus infection - Houston Chronicle

Image
The start of fall means back-to-school, football and pumpkin-flavored everything. It also brings a higher occurrence of sinus infections. Sinus infections are very common; they affect an estimated one in eight adults each year, and Americans spend more than $1 billion annually on over-the-counter-medications to treat them, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. It can be tricky to identify them, though, because many sinus infection symptoms are also associated with the common cold. MORE FROM EVAN MACDONALD: A Houston Methodist surgeon's web series is changing the conversation around women in medicine If symptoms like congestion or post-nasal drip last more than 10 days, it's likely a sign you have a bacterial sinus infection and need to see a doctor, said Dr. Tran Locke, an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist at Baylor College of Medicine. Those longer-lasting symptoms can be frustrating to deal with until they
