Swollen Penis: Foreskin, Shaft, Urethra Causes - Verywell Health

Image
A swollen penis can occur due to many causes other than a normal erection. The abnormal swelling may be due to an allergy or caused by an infection that leads to balanitis (inflammation of the penis head), posthitis (inflammation of the foreskin), or urethritis (inflammation of the urethra). Injuries can also lead to swelling, including a penile fracture or an abnormal curve called Peyronie's disease. There are also rare but serious causes like penile cancer and paraphimosis (a medical emergency in which the foreskin becomes trapped behind the head of the penis). This article looks at nine possible causes of a swollen penis. It also describes ways to treat or manage the condition and when it is time to see a specialist known as a urologist. The Battle Against the Fungal Apocalypse Is Just Beginning - WIRED

Image
In February, a dermatologist in New York City contacted the state's health department about two female patients, ages 28 and 47, who were not related but suffered from the same troubling problem. They had ringworm, a scaly, crusty, disfiguring rash covering large portions of their bodies. Ringworm sounds like a parasite, but it is caused by a fungus—and in both cases, the fungus was a species that had never been recorded in the US. It was also severely drug-resistant, requiring treatment with several types of antifungals for weeks. There was no indication where the patients might have acquired the infections; the older woman had visited Bangladesh the previous summer, but the younger one, who was pregnant and hadn't traveled, must have picked it up in the city. That seemed alarming—but in one of the largest and most mobile cities on the planet, weird medical things happen. The state reported the cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the New York doctors

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Symptoms in Adults and Kids - Verywell Health

Image
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a viral infection that causes symptoms of a cold, such as a runny nose, fever, and cough. TikToker Alix Earle is known for sharing open conversations about beauty and health with her followers online. Writing that "real skin is beautiful," Earle shared on her TikTok that she has been diagnosed with an inflammatory skin condition called perioral dermatitis. In a video posted on June 12, Earle showed her skin with and without a blurring filter on TikTok, encouraging her audience not to compare their skin to what they see on social media. With the filter off, viewers can see that the influencer has a rash between her nose and mouth. "Perioral dermatitis is kind of a tricky rash—we don't entirely know why people get it," Max Vale, MD, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Washington Medicine, told Health . The rash can appear like something between eczema and acne, Vale explained. It's most common in young adult women like Earle, and usually shows up around the mouth, he said. Earle has previ
