Is eczema an autoimmune disease? What to know - Medical News Today

Image
Eczema is an umbrella term for various inflammatory skin conditions, or dermatitis. Several types of dermatitis involve an overreaction from the immune system, and some research suggests autoimmune factors may play a role. An autoimmune disease is the result of the immune system mistakenly attacking the body's healthy tissues. Typically, this is different from other types of immune response, such as an allergic reaction, which happens when the body perceives exposure to a specific substance as a threat. However, a study in the Journal of Autoimmunity notes that one type of eczema, atopic dermatitis (AD), may start as an allergic reaction and progress to an autoimmune response. Eczema refers to a group of conditions that cause itchy, inflamed rashes on the skin. If an individual has a light skin tone, eczema may appear in red patches. The patches may appear brown, purple, or gray on darker skin tones. Doctors currently recognize seven types of eczema, which are: Most types of eczem

Conjunctivitis may be new covid symptom of subvariant Arcturus ... - The Washington Post

Image
Pinkeye — an inflamed, itchy and painful eye — is common during allergy season. But now some doctors are concerned the ailment may also be associated with a new coronavirus subvariant. Health experts say they have not conclusively linked the condition, formally called conjunctivitis, to the subvariant Arcturus. But anecdotal reports suggest the subvariant may produce fever and conjunctivitis, mainly among children. "It's occurring in the setting where they've documented community spread of this virus," said William Schaffner, a professor of infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Pinkeye can be caused by allergies, injury, bacterial infections or viral infections (not just covid), and can occur in both children and adults. We spoke with experts about what to do if you have this symptom and when to see a doctor. What to know Adblock test (Why?)

FDA OKs First Poop-Based Oral Therapy - Medpage Today

Image
The FDA approved the first oral fecal microbiota product for preventing recurrent Clostridioides difficile infections in adults, the agency announced on Wednesday. Developed as SER-109 and given the trade name of Vowst, the therapy is indicated for patients who have already received a course of antibiotics for recurrent C. difficile infections. SER-109 -- which involves four pills taken once a day for 3 consecutive days -- contains live bacteria from donor fecal matter, with the donors and stool screened for a slew of pathogens. Despite that, the agency still warns that the product carries the potential risk of transmitting infectious agents or food allergens. "Today's approval provides patients and healthcare providers a new way to help prevent recurrent C. difficile infection," Peter Marks, MD, PhD, director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in a statement. "The availability of a fecal microbiota product that can be ta

How Candida Auris Is and Isn't Treated - Verywell Health

Image
Key Takeaways Candida auris infections are on the rise. Because some cases are resistant to antifungal medications, they can be challenging or impossible to treat. The most common course of treatment for Candida auris infections right now is a mix of antifungal medications that target the fungal cell wall. There's plenty of misinformation online about treating or preventing Candida auris infections with over-the-counter drugs or by eliminating sugar, but experts say these methods are not effective and are dangerous. Candida auris (C. auris) is making headlines lately as infections are appearing in clinical settings across the world, including in the U.S. While data is limited, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that around 30-60% of patients infected with C. auris have died. C. auris is a type of yeast—a family of fungus—that can live on the skin. It may not cause harm in relatively healthy people, but it can lead to a potentially

My Balls Hurt, but Why? - Giddy

Image
Here's a hint: It might not actually be your testicles causing the pain. The 2006 Mike Judge movie "Idiocracy" has proved a bit prophetic. It got many things about the current era eerily correct. It's a little surprising then that in 2023, we still don't have a show called "Ow, My Balls" as they did in the movie. In the film, the fictional TV show's character howled in pain as his crotch was repeatedly kicked, battered and bitten by dogs. In real life, however, it's not always so easy to identify the source of below-the-belt pain. Many men suffer various forms of testicular pain that are far less straightforward. Here, we look at several types of pain down there, both acute and chronic. You will also find out why urologists are leaning into calling this "scrotal content pain" rather than testicular pain. (Hint: It's not always the testicle that's hurting you.) "It's a very common issue," said Neel Parek

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): Causes, Symptoms, Treatment - Verywell Health

Image
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that affects the urinary system. The urinary system works to remove waste and extra water from the body. It includes the kidneys, two ureters, the bladder, and the urethra.  Common UTI symptoms include pain or burning with urination, a fever, and cloudy urine. Women are much more likely to experience UTIs than men. Other risk factors include diabetes, spinal cord injury, and catheter use (a tube inserted into the bladder to drain urine).  UTIs are usually diagnosed with a urine test and treated with antibiotics. This article discusses the symptoms, causes, and treatment options for urinary tract infections.  UTI Symptoms The most common symptom of a urinary tract infection is pain or burning with urination. Other common symptoms of UTIs include: When the infection spreads to the kidneys, additional symptoms may include: Fever  Fatigue  Sha

Scientists working on an affordable vaccine for bacteria causing ... - Study Finds

Image
DUNDEE, Scotland — Scientists in Scotland are hoping to produce the first affordable vaccine against Strep A — the infection that commonly leads to strep throat. Researchers at a spinout company linked to the University of Dundee believe that they can drive down the costs of creating "glycoconjugate" vaccines, which are great for preventing infections but are incredibly expensive to make currently. Right now, the only treatments for a Strep A infection are antibiotics, but there is evidence that the bacteria is becoming resistant to some of the drugs — such as azithromycin. This medication is a common alternative for people with strep throat who are allergic to penicillin. In most people, an infection with the Group A Streptococcus (GAS) bacteria will cause only mild illness characterized by a very sore throat. However, it can lead to impetigo, scarlet fever, or tonsillitis. In very rare cases, the infection can cause a potentially deadly invasive form of the disease known

Different Generations of Cephalosporin Medication - Verywell Health

Image
Cephalosporins are one of the most widely prescribed classes of medications in the world. Chances are you have encountered these antibiotics even if you are unfamiliar with the name. For example, among other things, Keflex (cephalexin) is used to treat skin infections and infections of the bone, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and middle ear. Additionally, Rocephin (ceftriaxone) is used to treat pneumonia. Getty Images What Are Cephalosporins? Cephalosporins were first discovered in sewer water off the coast of Sardinia in 1945. By 1964, the first cephalosporin was prescribed. Cephalosporins are structurally similar to other antibiotics. Like penicillins, cephalosporins have a beta-lactam ring attached to a dihyrdothiazole ring. Hanging off this dihyrdothiazole ring are various side chains, the composition of which makes for different cephalosporins with different pharmacology and antimicrobial activity. Cephalosporins have three differe

Different cell types in the brain are affected by tick infection - Science Daily

Image
The dreaded tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus infects different types of brain cells in different parts of the brain, depending on whether the affected person's immune system is activated or not. This is shown in a new study at Umeå University, Sweden. "This increased understanding of how the virus behaves in the brain and how it activates the immune system is a crucial step in the development of effective treatments and preventive measures against this difficult disease," says Anna Överby, professor at Umeå University and leader of the research group behind the current study. What the Umeå researchers have mapped is how the TBE virus infects the brain to cause encephalitis. The researchers developed a method to three-dimensionally determine the location of viruses in the brain of mice and determine which specific parts of the brain have been infected with TBE virus. The method is based on information from image analyses that were combined with studies of gene expre

Causes of Thrush: Oral, Vaginal, and Balanitis - Patient.info

Image
Summary Thrush is caused by infection with a type of yeast called Candida - it's sometimes called a yeast infection. It's most commonly due to the species Candida albicans , although other Candida species can cause thrush too. Candida normally lives harmlessly in our bodies. It's normal to find it in the mouth, on the skin, in the vagina, and on the penis, amongst other places, without it causing any problems. However, sometimes it can cause infection. This happens if there is a problem with the immune system, a problem with the skin, or a disruption in the balance of healthy bacteria, allowing Candida to grow and invade the skin or lining of the mouth/vagina/penis, causing infection. Causes of oral thrush include: Having a weakened or under-developed immune system due to age - for instance in babies and in older people. Taking antibiotics. Wearing dentures, especially if they don't fit properly, or aren't cleaned properly. Poor oral hygiene - for example, not br
