Roseola vs. measles rash: What is the difference? - Medical News Today

Image
Roseola and measles are two different diseases that present with a high fever and a rash. They are both most commonly seen in childhood, although measles can affect people of any age, and roseola in adults is very rare. While both diseases share similarities, there are distinguishing factors, such as how the symptoms present and the disease progression. Read on to find out the difference between roseola and measles rashes. Roseola, also known as roseola infantum, sixth disease, or exanthema subitum, is a viral infection that typically affects children. The human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) or human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7) causes roseola. The disease is spread through tiny respiratory droplets that people either breathe in or pick up from surfaces they touch. This disease usually presents in children between the ages of 6–12 months . Children who have this disease experience a high fever, followed by a pink or red rash. Roseola is a self-limiting viral illness, meaning it will typically go awa...

The Link Between Helicobacter pylori Infection and Stomach Ulcers - News-Medical.net

Image
Research has shown that the formation of stomach ulcers is associated with colonization of the stomach with Helicobacter pylori bacteria. A significant body of evidence exists demonstrating the link between Helicobacter pylori infection and the establishment of gastrointestinal problems including gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastric carcinoma, and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. Image Credit: Crevis/Shutterstock.com Here, we discuss the link between Helicobacter pylori infection and stomach ulcers, give an outline of the history of the bacteria and the establishment of this relationship, and consider the significance of these findings. A brief history of Helicobacter pylori bacteria For over a century, scientists have understood that the human stomach contains a variety of bacteria, and roughly two decades ago the Helicobacter pylori species of spiral bacteria was successfully isolated and cultured by Barry Marshall and Robin Warren. This bacteria is...

Research reveals potential new strategy to combat urinary tract infections - Science Daily

Image
Identifying the dynamic events occurring during urinary tract infections (UTI) has revealed a new potential strategy to combat this condition, considered the most common type of infection. Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine and Washington University School of Medicine have discovered that the sequence of events taking place during UTI sustains a delicate balance between the responses directed at eliminating the bacteria and those minimizing tissue damage that may occur in the process. The NRF2 pathway stood out as a key contributor to this balance, by regulating both the potential damage to tissues and the elimination of bacteria. Treating an animal model of UTI with the FDA-approved, anti-inflammatory drug dimethyl fumarate (DMF), a known NRF2 activator, reduced tissue damage and bacterial burden, opening the possibility that DMF could be used to manage this condition in the future. The study appears in the journal Cell Reports. "Urinary tract infections are not only c...

Vitamin D for Psoriasis: Creams, Supplements, Analogues - Greatist

Image
When a psoriasis flare-up erupts, seeking a soothing solution can become your top priority. But if a medicine cabinet full of lotions and creams isn't cutting it, can adding a vitamin to your supplement stash help you heal? Vitamin D is often hailed as a miracle vitamin to prevent illness and even help skin. But when it comes to psoriasis, can it actually help? Good news, it just might. You can get vitamin D from food or supplements, but your body mainly creates Vitamin D from the sun ☀️. Unfortunately, it's pretty easy to develop a vitamin D deficiency if you live in a cloudy climate (especially if you have darker skin). It's estimated that about 41 percent of Americans have a vitamin D deficiency, which can lead to a weak immune system. Research also suggests psoriasis may be linked to vitamin D deficiency. Those with psoriasis often have low levels of vitamin D. And because vitamin D helps keep your immune system in tip-top shape, not getting enough can leave you vulnera...

iStock/CasPhotography Martin Hoenigl, the President of the European Confederation of Medical Mycology, discusses the challenges of diagnosing and treating mucormycosis. Mucormycosis is perhaps not a term you were familiar with prior to the COVID-19 outbreak. However, the profile of this rare fungal disease has been rising in tandem with COVID-19 cases, particularly in under-resourced countries. Earlier this year, as the Delta variant of COVID-19 started to spread, cases of patients suffering from the so-called 'black fungus' began to mulitply, causing thousands of fatalities in its wake. While not the primary cause of the infection, physiological damage incurred as a result of COVID-19, and its consequential treatment, has triggered a surge in mucormycosis cases. Combined with issues around the availability of medical equipment and resources, medicine misuse, environmental exposure, and high levels of undiagnosed chronic diseases, many critically ill patients have...
