Black fungus infection is reportedly back in major cities - Onmanorama

Amid the threat of another wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, cases of black fungus are reported from major Indian cities. The doctors in cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru say that black fungus (Mucomyrcosis) have been reported here. In 2021, during the second wave, many people got affected by the black fungus after recovering from COVID-19.

Dr. S Santhosh, senior ENT consultant at the Bengaluru Manipal Hospital, in an interview to thehealthsite.com, said that four cases Mucomyrcosis have been reported in the hospital last week. He pointed out that severe headache, pain on face, cold and running nose are some of the symptoms of Mucomyrcosis.

Mucomyrcosis is caused by exposure to the mucormyete moulds or fungus. Diabetic patients and those who have weak immunity are prone to this infection. This disease could cause losing of eye sight and even death. Corticosteroids that suppress the immunity system could aid the fungal infection. Besides, diseases like cancer and HIV that ruins the immunity of the body too could attract mucormyete moulds. Black fungus is seen in babies who have had a pre mature birth. Stem cell replacement too could increase the chance of Mucomyrcosis.

Dr. Santhosh added that the black fungus could be prevented to an extent through sinusitis treatment and controlling diabetes. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are significant in saving a patient. Removing the damaged cells from the body and prescribing anti – fungal medicines are effective treatment methods.
