Scientists Use Synthesized Antibiotic to Treat Bacterial Infection in Mice for the First Time - Interesting Engineering

Image
Now for the first time since the antibiotics discovery, scientists have synthesized the drug and used it to treat a bacterial infection.  Researchers from the University of Lincoln, UK, used a simplified, synthesis form of teixobactin to treat a bacterial infection in mice. Antibiotic also reduced infection severity In addition to clearing the infection, the synthesized teixobactin also managed to minimize the severity of the infection which was not achieved by the clinically-used antibiotic, moxifloxacin, used as a control in the study. The complete findings have been published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.  There are increasing instances of drug-resistant infections causing fatalities around the globe. The development of new antibiotics is a crucial area of interest for the medical research community.  Dr Ishwar Singh, a specialist in novel drug design and development from the University of Lincoln's School of Pharmacy, said: "Translating

Sign up to our Wearside Echoes Newsletters. A monthly round-up of our retro best bits Philip Curtis, from Sunderland Antiquarian Society, has shared another of his great features on Wearside's past. And this one focuses on the old remedies that grandmothers used to use to cure everything from colds to constipation. Take a look. The era when sweaty socks, radishes and red hot pokers were used to treat ailments - and grandmas came up with the remedies - before the NHS arrived. Most Popular In the days before the National Health Service, Sunderland's families sometimes struggled to pay for health treatments. And that meant it was often the grandmothers of the family who came up with their own home-made help. One of the factors was that many people were reluctant to pay for, or could not afford, treatment and so before a doctor was called in, home cures were often tried - and what a lot of home cures there were. Socks, preferably, sweaty, were used to treat sore throats by placing

New understanding of 'superantigens' could lead to improved staph infection treatments - University of Wisconsin-Madison

Image
The bacterium Staphylococcus aureus has long been known to cause infections in humans, ranging from mild skin infections to pneumonia to more serious infections of the heart. In high-income countries, it's the leading cause of a sometimes-fatal condition known as infective endocarditis, involving inflammation of the heart's valves or lining. Now, in a new study, researchers at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine describe another way the bacterium can cause harm: by undermining the body's ability to heal from those infections. The findings may point the way toward improving treatment of infections with S. aureus , more commonly called a staph infection. Wilmara Salgado-Pabón The S. aureus bacteria produce small toxins, called superantigens, that bind to white blood cells and over-activate the immune system, which can cause complications for the circulatory system. The study in rabbits, published recently in Science Advances, found that a supera
