Diabetic Skin Rash: Types, Causes, Treatment and More - EndocrineWeb

Image
Diabetes can impact the health of your entire body, including the skin. As the largest organ in the body, your skin has many functions, like protecting you from infection, UV rays, and injury. There are a few different skin conditions linked with diabetes. Some changes in the skin may happen before diabetes is even diagnosed. Fortunately, if recognized early, most skin problems can be effectively treated. Causes of Diabetes-Related Skin Problems Skin conditions are seen in almost 30% of people with diabetes. Hyperglycemia, or high blood glucose levels, can happen with uncontrolled diabetes. This condition is linked with many complications, both microvascular and macrovascular. Microvascular complications are related to the very small blood vessels in the body. Changes in the small blood vessels can impact the eyes and kidneys. Macrovascular complications refer to damage in the larger blood vessels, like the arteries that move blood away from the heart. Together, microvascular and macr

Extemporaneous Compounding of Amoxicillin Suspensions During ... - Pharmacy Times

Abstract The primary objective of the study is to compound amoxicillin 400 mg per 5 mL oral suspension using 2 formulations. Amoxicillin 500 mg capsules were mixed in a vehicle of Ora-Plus and Ora-Sweet (1:1), as well as an Ora-Plus/Ora-Sweet vehicle alkalinized with sodium hydroxide 20% (w/v) solution to a pH of 6. The suspensions were stored in PET plastic bottles under refrigeration and at room temperature for stability testing. The stability parameters examined were pH, concentration using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), odor, suspendability, and appearance for 10 days. Suspensions of both vehicles were stable at room temperature and under refrigeration for 10 days. Background Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum, penicillin-based antibiotic that binds to penicillin-binding-proteins (PBP) to inhibit cell wall synthesis. 1 Amoxicillin is commercially available as tablets, chewable tablets, capsules, and oral granules for suspension. Amoxicillin is rapidly absorbed upon ad

Scalp Psoriasis: Causes, Treatment, and Pictures - Verywell Health

Image
About 3% of American adults (7.5 million people) have psoriasis. Of them, nearly half have it on their scalp. This condition is the same as psoriasis anywhere else on the body. However, scalp psoriasis is harder to treat since it's under the hair. This article discusses the symptoms, causes, and treatment of scalp psoriasis. Scalp Psoriasis Pictures Scalp psoriasis has a distinctive appearance, including white or silver crusty patches and skin discoloration. It may extend beyond the hairline and down onto the forehead, neck, or ears. Reproduced with permission from ©DermNet New Zealand and ©Waikato Hospital www.dermnetnz.org 2023. Symptoms include: Discolored, thick, and inflamed patches (plaques) Silvery-white scales that flake off like dandruff Dry sc

An optogenetic toolkit for light-inducible antibiotic resistance - Nature.com

Image
Abstract Antibiotics are a key control mechanism for synthetic biology and microbiology. Resistance genes are used to select desired cells and regulate bacterial populations, however their use to-date has been largely static. Precise spatiotemporal control of antibiotic resistance could enable a wide variety of applications that require dynamic control of susceptibility and survival. Here, we use light-inducible Cre recombinase to activate expression of drug resistance genes in Escherichia coli . We demonstrate light-activated resistance to four antibiotics: carbenicillin, kanamycin, chloramphenicol, and tetracycline. Cells exposed to blue light survive in the presence of lethal antibiotic concentrations, while those kept in the dark do not. To optimize resistance induction, we vary promoter, ribosome binding site, and enzyme variant strength using chromosome and plasmid-based constructs. We then link inducible resistance to expression of a heterologous fatty acid enzyme to increase pr
