Unique combination of intestinal bacteria in Japanese centenarians ... - News-Medical.Net

Image
We are pursuing the dream of eternal life. We fast to stay healthy. And each year, we spend billions of kroner on treatment to make sure we stay alive. But some people turn 100 years old all by themselves. Why is that? Researchers from the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research at the University of Copenhagen have set out to find the answer. Studying 176 healthy Japanese centenarians, the researchers learned that the combination of intestinal bacteria and bacterial viruses of these people is quite unique. We are always eager to find out why some people live extremely long lives. Previous research has shown that the intestinal bacteria of old Japanese citizens produce brand new molecules that make them resistant to pathogenic – that is, disease-promoting – microorganisms. And if their intestines are better protected against infection, well, then that is probably one of the things that cause them to live longer than others." Postdoc Joachim Johansen, f

First bird flu casualty detected in Southwestern Alaska - KYUK

Image
Avian influenza has been detected in a migratory bird in Western Alaska. On Thursday, May 25, scientists found the first casualty from the highly pathogenic avian influenza. It was a cackling goose. "So it is here in the Yukon Delta again, we did find a bird that succumbed to avian influenza with all the normal signs of the neurological disorders. When they sat around and then next day being dead, looking like he's just sleeping on a pond. So we've had our first casualty detected," says Bryan Daniels, lead waterfowl biologist at the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. Daniels advises hunters to cook their game to at least 265 degrees to kill any viruses that might be in the meat. He also wants to remind hunters to practice basic sanitary practices. This includes washing your hands after you handle the game first. No eating, smoking, or chewing until after you do so. You don't want to be putting anything in or near your mouth. Melasma, a skin disorder due to hypermelanosis - Emergency Live International

Image
Melasma spots are usually coffee-coloured or tending to grey, irregularly shaped, and are most frequent in the so-called T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) as well as on the cheekbones and upper lip. They are different from moles because not only are they not raised, but they usually appear very small and then enlarge over time (nearby spots tend to join and form larger ones). They are asymptomatic and typically worsen after sun exposure precisely because those areas, richer in melanin, tend to tan more than others. In addition to the face, they can also appear on other areas such as the arms and neck. The most recent medical research provides very interesting data on the disease. Those most affected by melasma are female and of childbearing age or during pregnancy. This is because the dysfunction seems to result directly from the action of particular hormones such as oestrogen and the intake of certain contraceptive drugs. Genetics and belonging to certain ethnic gr

Spironolactone may be effective in the treatment of acne vulgaris - Physician's Weekly

Image
Bookmark 1. Spironolactone showed more effective improvement in acne at 12 and 24 weeks after treatment initiation as compared with the placebo. Evidence Rating Level :1 (Excellent) Acne is highly prevalent in adolescents and can persist into adulthood. The first-line management of mild to moderate acne typically involves a combination of topical preparations containing retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, or antibiotics. One-third of patients seeking treatment for acne receive long oral antibiotic rouses (>28 days), which presents a concern for developing antibiotic resistance. Spironolactone, a potassium-sparing diuretic, may be a much-needed alternative to oral antibiotics given its anti-androgenic properties. The Spironolactone for Adult Female Acne (SAFA) trial aimed to assess whether spironolactone improves acne in women compared with placebo.  From 10 centers in England and Wales, 407 eligible women – aged 18 years or over with facial acne for at least six months t

Image
A breastfeeding woman is diagnosed with tinea corporis involving her chest, breasts, and abdomen. She would like to pursue treatment with both oral and topical medications and is wondering what oral medication would be safest for breastfeeding. She also asks you if she can continue to breastfeed her infant. What advice should you give this patient? The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life. 1 Many women become discouraged when a clinician advises them to pump and dump or take a break from breastfeeding when taking certain medications or if they develop an infection. Clinicians may not realize that any pauses in breastfeeding can dramatically decrease breastmilk supply. There are very few scenarios when a physician should discourage breastfeeding or advise a patient to discard expressed breastmilk. The case patient should be counseled about the contagious nature of tinea corporis. Specifically, she should be advi

The following is a summary of "Frequency of Helicobacter pylori in Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis Whose Methotrexate Was Stopped Due to Gastrointestinal Intolerance," published in the March 2023 issue of Rheumatology by Guloksuz, et al. For a study, researchers sought to compare the frequency of Helicobacter pylori infection among patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who experienced methotrexate (MTX)-related gastrointestinal system (GIS) intolerance and those without intolerance; second, to identify factors associated with MTX-related GIS intolerance. MTX-related GIS intolerance was defined as the discontinuation of MTX due to dyspeptic symptoms despite supportive measures, and it was observed in 1,742 (31.3%) out of 5,572 MTX users. A total of 390 patients who underwent at least one gastroscopic evaluation were included in the final analysis. The
